There are many ways to wash and clean your fruits and vegetables before juicing them. You can soak them, just rinse them off, or use bottled sprays. Washing your produce properly can help to get rid of some of the pesticides, insect residues, and other unnecessary chemicals that can sometimes be found on them.
The reason why you will want to consider using these is because not all produce you find at the supermarket is treated the same. Some produce is grown conventionally, and some is grown organically. It is good to buy organic produce, especially if it is on “The Dirty Dozen” list, whenever you can; however, I know this is not always possible for everyone. It is still a good idea to rinse your organically grown produce before juicing it.
There are ways to clean your conventional produce that can remove some of the pesticides, most of the insect residues, as well as that waxy film you often see on conventional apples and cucumbers. Here are some of the ways you can clean your produce:
Use White Vinegar To Wash Your Fruits and Vegetables Before Juicing
White vinegar is a natural and cost effective way to clean fruit and vegetables. It is a household item and is so versatile. When used to clean produce, white vinegar has been said to kill 98% of bacteria and removes some pesticides. A good ratio to follow if you are using vinegar in a spray bottle is to put 3 parts of water to 1 part of vinegar. After you finish making the vinegar wash, spray it on your produce and then rinse it off.
Another way of using vinegar to wash produce is to soak it. Before you start the process of soaking your fruit and vegetables, make sure your sink is clean. A quick way to soak your produce is to fill up your kitchen sink or a salad bowl with water and then add a cup of vinegar to the salad bowl or two cups of vinegar to an almost full kitchen sink of water. Some people will add 1 part of white vinegar to every 10 parts of water. This means if you put 10 cups inside of your bowl, then you would add one cup of vinegar. Either of these two ways will work just fine.
After your water and white vinegar is in the bowl or sink, you can put your produce in the solution, and let it sit for anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes. Rinse off your produce after this, and you are ready to use it. Some people leave it in even longer, just to give it an extra bath!
Lemon Juice and Baking Soda For Washing Produce
The combination of lemon juice and baking soda is another way to clean your produce and is said to help remove insect residues and pesticides. Just add two tablespoons baking soda, two tablespoons lemon juice, and one cup of water to a spray bottle. Shake to dissolve all the ingredients together, and use when needed. To use this solution, just spray it on your produce and then rinse it off.
Natural Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Wash
An alternative to making your own produce sprays and washes is to buy store bought vegetable and fruit sprays. Although they are very convenient, they do tend to cost more than making your own. If you do want to use them, it is best to purchase one that is 100% natural and not ammonia-based.
I have a few suggestions below that many people use for this purpose. The recommendations I have made here are for natural products that have positive reviews and have been used by many people. Even though these sprays are all natural, or are listed as all natural, we recommend that you always rinse your produce off after using them or any other wash for produce.
Any method I have discussed is a good way to clean your produce and should be especially considered when using larger amounts of conventionally grown produce.
