I have wanted to write this post for a long time! I bet you have either known people personally, or have read stories all over the internet about how absolutely wonderful doing a juice cleanse is. In many of these stories, no where is it mentioned that it was hard at all. It just seems to be a walk in the park, and as if these people are walking on a rainbow, or floating on the most wonderful pink fluffy cloud ever!
Reading this information, you may of decided to do a juice cleanse yourself and are surprised when you find out it isn’t all rainbows and roses.
You might wonder if you are different, or maybe it’s just that juice cleansing isn’t for you. You never heard anyone talk about some of the issues that you dealt with while doing a juice cleanse. You might not even want to ask anyone about some of it, because of embarrassment.
This is something I don’t see many juicing sites talk about, and I wanted to come right out and talk about it. It’s better to know what you might be getting into before you do than to find out later and feel like you are missing something, or that all of these people who talked about juice cleansing are just full of it.
First of all, I want to let you know that each juice cleanse is completely different from the last, and that everyday of a juice cleanse is usually different from every other day. Some juice cleanses will go very well, and you might wonder why some people say that it can be difficult. Some juice cleanses can be pretty tough, and really put you to the test. To be completely honest, at least in my case, each juice cleanse is full of ups and downs. This has also been the case with a lot of the people I have talked to who have done juice cleanses.
I have done several juice cleanses, including multiple 30 day juice cleanses. What I’m saying is that this is coming from someone who knows a bit about the subject. 🙂 I want to warn you ahead of time that I am going to be as candid as I can so you know the reality of doing a juice cleanse. If reading about poop, pee, and other things of that nature really makes you uneasy, then you might want to scroll down the page a bit. I am just going to tell it like it is.
Okay, so I guess I’ll just jump right in, and answer the first question you might have.
Am I Going To Be In The Bathroom All Day?
Yes, your bathroom routine is going to change during your juice cleanse. Will you be in their 24-7 pooping your brains out all of the time? No, most people won’t. That has never been my experience.
Will you poop more during the first days of your juice cleanse? Yes, most likely you will.
First of all, many juices have a laxative effect. Not only this, but you are detoxing during your juice cleanse. There is stuff coming out of you that possibly has been inside of you for quite some time. You are literally cleaning your insides out.
My honest advise is if you live with other people get some air freshener, incense, or something to freshen up the bathroom while you are on your juice cleanse. Leave the windows open in there, turn on the fan, do what you have to do because it’s a possibility that you may be using that room a bit more during the first few days.
Liquid Poop, Yay!
If you’re doing an extended juice cleanse for longer than just a few days, then at some point a lot of what comes out of your rear end will be liquid (That’s right, liquid poop!). Sometimes it will go back and forth. Some days you get liquid, some days you get solid. Some people have said it can feel like peeing out of your butt. Yep.
I have done more than one 30 day juice cleanse, and was surprised that even on day 30, there can still be solid poop sometimes coming out. This is because we are still cleaning out old matter that is inside our bodies, and also because whether we take in only liquids or not, our body is constantly refreshing itself by cleaning out old dead cells and replacing them with new ones. Some of these dead cells come out in our excrement. You are literally rebuilding your body with what you are putting in it. That’s why it’s good to give it good stuff.
However, a lot of it will be straight liquid.
Will I Get Diarrhea?
I only have one time. I know others who have also, but usually it doesn’t last very long. For me, it was only a few hours of one day, during one of my juice cleanses.
Do some people get diarrhea, and have it last longer than a few hours? Sure, it does happen. I personally believe that your diet before your juice cleanse or specific sensitivities may be the cause of this. Whatever it is, many people don’t get diarrhea, but yes, some people will have a diarrhea experience.
Will I Pee A Lot?
This is a definite YES! If you are drinking the right amount of juice, which is a minimum of one gallon a day, then you will be peeing more often than normal. Sometimes you will have to go pee every 5 to 20 minutes! Sometimes you won’t pee for a few hours. This is simply because you are taking in all of your nutrients in the form of liquid. You are constantly filling your bladder up! This is also part of what is cleansing you from the inside out.
Will I Get Nauseous and Sick?
I honestly have never gotten nauseous or sick during a juice cleanse. My stomach did feel a little off once when I made some very interesting juice that just wasn’t working with me. Other people have said they have gotten nauseous and sick, so I think it depends on the person and other factors like freshness of juice, your diet before you started your juice cleanse, and maybe there is a specific juice that just doesn’t work for you.
Consider Making Your Own Juice
To be honest I have never done it any other way. In fact, when we first started this website and blog, there were no “juice cleanse companies” around that I was aware of. There may have been a few hiding out somewhere, but this whole get your juice made somewhere else and have it shipped to you thing is not how I’ve ever done it and it’s not how it all began. Besides, other than the time it takes it’s relatively easy to make your own green juice from home.
I am not knocking any of these companies, or anyone who has done a juice cleanse that way. If you know someone who does this personally, and the juice you are drinking was made the very day you are going to drink it, then this is different. If you do not know the people who make the juices and/or the juice you are drinking was made days and days before this, unfortunately this could be one of the reasons you might get sick.
I have heard there are some good people out there who make it in sanitary conditions, immediately bottle it up, and get it into your hands fast. In general though, for the investment of one of these “juice cleanses” you could buy your own juicer, and be ready to do many of them, as well as enjoy fresh home made juice daily. I’m just saying.
Will I Get Headaches All Of The Time?
This really depends on a few different things. One of them is if you drink a lot of coffee or even a lot of tea that contains caffeine in it. If you were to go off of coffee without doing a juice cleanse, you would get headaches. That’s one of the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, whether you are doing a juice cleanse or not.
I can tell you this about the headaches. They will pass! Honestly, for some of you a headache could last for a few days in a row. My partner Liisa was getting off coffee during a 30 day juice cleanse we did once, and had some awful headaches for a few days. They eventually passed, and she felt so much better once they did. She was also very happy to be off the coffee for that time, and found a lot of her energy returning because of it.
Headaches also come from detoxification, and I have experienced some of this myself. During one of my juice cleanses I had a headache for about 2 days in a row. It wasn’t pleasant, but I got through it. I was determined to cleanse my body, and lose some extra weight. Once it passed I felt good. Some people experience no headaches, and I also have done juice cleanses where I never had a single headache. In fact, my last 30 day juice cleanse I did was like that.
Detox Is Interesting
There can be many interesting little side effects that people experience due to detox. I won’t go into all of these here because that is for another post. I did want to fill you in on some of these, and they can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, general feelings of fatigue, bumps on the body, bumps in your mouth, acne break outs, odors coming from your body, bad breath, and other random little interesting things.
Sometimes to be honest, you just may feel a bit “strange”. Hey, your body is cleaning itself out of what sometimes is years and years of toxic matter! It may feel this just a little bit! 🙂
Many of us are used to dealing with our feelings by eating food, abusing substances, or maybe not abusing them but using substances or something outside of ourselves to “deal with” our feelings. When you do a juice cleanse, you will quickly realize that this is something you may do.
Especially when you are going through times of stress, or other tough emotional situations you will realize very fast that this is when you crave food the most during your juice cleanse. Some of my hardest days during my juice cleanses were when I was stressed or upset about something.
This in turn can help you to face something directly that you may not have normally faced this way. Ultimately, this is a good thing! In the moment though it can sometimes be pretty uncomfortable and can really challenge you during your juice cleanse.
Some people will break down in tears and not really know why it’s happening. Some people will just feel sad some days. You might feel really tired suddenly and not know why. I want to let you know that this is normal. On top of dealing with some of your feelings possibly for the first time in a long time (a very long time for some of us), you are detoxing.
Detoxification isn’t only a physical process. It can be an emotional, as well as spiritual process. Think about this. You are releasing energies that have been inside of you for a long time. Some of them can be very toxic energies. It isn’t unusual that you might have some feelings about this. Again, you may not even know why you are having a feeling in the moment.
My advise is to just go with it. If you feel sad, let yourself feel sad. If you feel tired and want to sleep, get some rest. Let yourself experience what you experience. Don’t struggle or fight against it or try to make yourself feel something different. Let it come, have its time, and then when the time is right, let it go. This too shall pass, and you most likely will come out of the other side of it feeling lighter, and just all around better.
Will I Crave Food All Of The Time?
The honest truth is there will be days where you do, and days where you don’t. To break it down even further there will most likely be moments where you do, and moments where you don’t.
In my experience, and many others who I have spoken to, you will have many days where it’s not a problem at all. You can feel great, and sometimes barely even think about food. Other days can be a complete mix. Your thoughts may sound something like this on a mixed day.
Morning and the first two hours after you wake up: I feel so good today! I am ready for another day. I don’t know why people complain about having a hard time with juice cleansing. I am just loving my juice! In fact, I might just extend this juice cleanse and go for 30 days, or who knows maybe even longer!
Mid morning immediately after the first two hours: Wow, I am hungry. This is harder than I thought. I hope I can make it through today and just complete the week. 60 days? Was I crazy? I should feel good about doing 7! Yea, I think 7 will
be good and then I’ll eat better when I am done.
After Noon: Whew, that was rough for a bit there. Okay, I am feeling better now. Ready to do this! It’s just one day at a time! I got this!
Late Noon: I am doing great today! I know I had a rough time earlier, but if I can get through that, maybe I can still go longer than 7 days! Who knows maybe even 30 or longer like I was thinking earlier! The sky is the limit! I feel great!
Early Evening: What was I thinking earlier? Oh my god that pizza smells so good! Oh, I better keep walking. Don’t stop, no pizza, no pizza. Okay, maybe just one smell. Oh! Oh, I am so used to eating dinner about now. Can I really do this for 7 days? I want to so bad, but wow. What if I just ate today, and then started back up again tomorrow? That would be alright wouldn’t it?
Late Evening: Whewww tough day. I got this now. Just going to get some sleep and hopefully tomorrow will be good.
I am not saying every day is like this, because some days are seriously awesome and you feel great all day. Then some days are tough, and you might not feel so great. In general, most extended 30 day juice cleanses I have done are a mixed bag. The shorter ones can also be interesting sometimes because honestly the first 3 days are usually the most challenging. At the same time this is not the case with everyone, and some people just take to it and have a great experience.
Having A Hard Time With Specific Fruits Or Vegetables
I have talked to people who have felt so disappointed because they wanted to do a juice cleanse and then found out they couldn’t handle a specific fruit or vegetable. They thought this meant they couldn’t do the juice cleanse, and they would miss out on the benefits if they didn’t juice these specific fruit or vegetable.
While it’s true you want to include a good variety of vegetables and fruit during your juice cleanse, you don’t have to juice exactly what someone else does. If you can’t handle kale, then substitute another leafy green. If celery is hard for you, then try cucumber or some romaine lettuce. As long as you are getting a good mix of greens and fruit, you have nothing to worry about.
I personally love celery and kale, and they are both excellent ingredients to include in your juice cleanse, but they are not 100% necessary. No one single ingredient is. It’s all about variety, or at minimum just making sure your juices are predominantly green.
Drink Enough Juice!
Before I finish this section I want to tell you that the biggest mistake people make is that they do not drink enough juice! You should be aiming to drink a minimum of one gallon a day, but if you want more, drink more! I drank around 2 gallons a day for a week or more during one of my juice cleanses and I lost 27 pounds that time. Yea, don’t think that drinking less is going to help you lose more weight, because it’s not. You’re just going to put your body into a starvation mode. Read more about this here.
Okay, Now The Good
As you can see there might be some interesting and maybe not always so pleasant things you can experience during your juice cleanse. Now let’s talk about the other stuff!
There was a day during my first 30 day juice cleanse where I rode my bike across town to work. Normally this ride was a tiring and sweaty trip I made before, I also got sweaty and tired at work. I must of been 20 or more days into my juice cleanse this day.
As I rode my bike I was so in the moment of enjoying the feeling of biking around that I rode right past where I worked, and ended up blocks away. On the way there, I was cutting around corners of the street and zooming around like a happy kid or something! Yea… I was energized, and hadn’t felt like that since I could remember.
Normally I would of been all frustrated and upset for riding past my work, since I would then have to ride back all that extra way. Yeah, I was a bit out of shape also obviously…
This day, I couldn’t of been more happy that I did it. In fact, I rode a few more blocks and just didn’t want the bike ride to end, like a kid who wants to stay out and play longer. I was a 37 year old man at the time, and just breathed in the moment and let it happen.
The first days of your juice cleanse probably won’t be charged like this, but give it some time and you will experience some days of amazing energy. This is part of what people are talking about when they say they felt amazing during their juice cleanse.
A General Feeling Of Well Being
I have experienced this at some point during every juice cleanse that I have done. I remember during one juice cleanse I was driving and a Bob Marley song came on the radio. I love Bob Marley’s music, but I don’t normally listen to Bob Marley now, although I did when I was younger.
Point being, was I really started to feel that song. Man, I mean I was feeling love for the world like I hadn’t in a long time, in that moment. I wondered why I didn’t always feel that way and just wished the feeling would stay. The moment lasted far beyond the song, and I was happy for it.
I have had many moments like that one. Doing a juice cleanse can do this, as it has a way of bringing you more into the moment on many days. As I talked about before, many of us handle our feelings by using something outside of ourselves to “deal with” them. This can be food, alcohol, drugs, or anything else that we put inside of ourselves in order to escape what we are feeling.
When you are forced to deal with some of these feelings, and also be more present in the moment, it can have some positive side effects. I’ve had feelings during my juice cleanses, that I hadn’t felt in a very long time. They were very happy, and when they were there, I just wanted to keep feeling that way.
It isn’t unusual to have moments or days where you feel at peace with yourself and the world, and to gain insight, as well as understanding into things that weren’t very clear to you before. There can be some big moments of clarity for you during your juice cleanse.
Healthy Weight Loss
Yes, if you do a juice cleanse for longer than 1 day, and need to lose weight then you will. I lost 27 pounds during one of my 30 day juice cleanses, and some people lose a whole lot more depending on how overweight they are.
It feels good when you can put your hands on your stomach and noticeably feel there is less, than was there before. Juice cleansing has probably been one of the best tools for weight loss that I have ever used before.
If you need to lose weight, juice cleansing is a great solution. If you are at a healthy weight, then you won’t lose unnecessary weight. If you just want to juice for detox, then don’t worry about it, you’re good. Just make sure like anyone else to drink a minimum of 1 gallon a day.
You want to drink a minimum of 1 gallon of juice a day, whether you need to lose weight or not. Your body knows what it needs. Your logical mind might have trouble wrapping itself around this. No big deal, because mine did too before I did my juice cleanses. I used to argue with my partner Liisa that it made no sense that I could drink as much juice as I wanted to each day and still lose weight. Hahaha… that was before I did all of the juice cleanses I did, and lost weight every single time. 🙂
In fact, I lost more weight when I drank more juice. I am completely serious! Read about one of my 30 day juice cleanse experiences where I drank a lot every day, and lost around 27 pounds. In my personal experience, you want to make your juice cleanse, a juice feast. This is not a deprivation diet where you are limiting what you drink. Nope! Drink as much as you want! No starving here! If you feel hungry, then make yourself a big ole jar of juice, and pound that sucker down! 🙂
Real Healthy Food Will Taste Better
After one of our longer juice cleanses Liisa, and myself broke our own cardinal rule, and ate pizza the second day after. Just the thought of pizza sounded so good! I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and the smell of it when I was near made was unbelievable.
Then I had a bite of our once favorite pizza, and immediately regretted it. We thought we had got an unflavored, or less flavored pizza. It tasted like cardboard with a flavorless sauce, flavorless toppings, and a salty taste covering it all. The smell was so much better than the actual taste. I couldn’t believe I had been craving this… How did I like this before???
Guess what tasted great? A huge salad from the salad bar. Yep… juicing and juice cleansing can change your taste buds for some time and you get to taste what food really tastes like. Normally, our taste buds have been so messed with and accustomed to artificial chemical flavors, as well as salt, that we can’t taste real food!
I am not kidding! The chemical flavors on many foods have been engineered and tested time and time again to get you to like them! They do this by overloading them with phony flavors, and fooling you into thinking you like them. There are also specific addictive chemicals such as MSG in some foods that fool your brain into thinking it wants more.
My first bite of a salad after one of my 30 day juice cleanses was like heaven on earth. The flavors were unbelievable. It was so crisp and fulfilling. I could taste the real flavor of food for the first time ever it felt like. I’m telling you, when your palate is clean and your taste buds have time to heal from all the damage that has been done to them real food tastes good!
I was able to eat a raw food diet for a few weeks after that. Where before going 100% raw for any amount of time beyond a few days was a challenge for me.
In general, you might just find that it will be easier to eat healthier after you do your juice cleanse, but especially after you do an extended juice cleanse. The longer your taste buds get to regenerate and take in 100% real nutrition, the more you crave it.
