We know how it can be to get really excited about doing a juice cleanse, and then how disappointing it can feel to not succeed once you’ve given it a shot! Liisa and myself, who write for this site, have done multiple juice cleanses, and believe it or not we have not completed every single one that we set out to do.
It’s taken us quite a few years, as well as a lot of trial and error, to really get better at completing our juice cleanses! We have learned some huge lessons along the way and have picked up some powerful tips that we want to pass along to you.
It doesn’t matter if your about to attempt your first juice cleanse, are trying to do another juice cleanse after an unsuccessful attempt, or would simply like to add more tips to your juice cleansing arsenal. These game changing tips can truly help you to be successful with your juice cleanse!
#1. Drink A Minimum Of One Gallon Of Juice A Day
If you’ve read many of our articles here on Raw Juice Cleanse Recipes then you might have noticed a theme. The point of a juice cleanse is not to starve yourself! During a juice cleanse (yes, even when your goal is weight loss) you want to flood your body with nutrient dense life giving juice!
This is one of the biggest points of confusion when it comes to doing a juice cleanse, and if you can understand and apply this one principle, then you are already way ahead of the game!
We know there are many different sites out there, and they recommend different amounts of juice to drink each day. We recognize how easy it can be to feel a bit confused about the entire subject. To fully explain how much juice you should be drinking during your juice cleanse, and why you want to be drinking this much we wrote an article. In this article we explain why you want to be drinking a minimum of one gallon of juice a day, and in this one here we talk about why you want a majority of those juices to be green.
We believe in juice feasting vs juice fasting. If you approach your juice cleanse with this tip in mind, you will be more equipped to surpass your cravings and the “hunger” you feel during. A basic rule is when you’re feeling hungry, drink more juice!
If weight loss is one of your goals, then you should definitely read this article in which we blogged almost daily our progress during a 30 day juice cleanse we did. We each lost around 27 pounds during that juice cleanse, and we did so by drinking 1-2 gallons of juice each and every single day!
Just to give you an idea of how much juice that is, there are 4 quarts in 1 gallon. This is 128 fluid ounces, and also is equal to 16 cups. The image in the header of this article shows 4 quart sized mason jars full of nutrient dense juice!
#2. Remember That A Juice Cleanse Can Be More Of A Mental And Emotional Battle, Rather Than A Physical One
Many of the cravings and issues that can deter you from successfully completing a juice cleanse are mental ones. Many people mistakenly think hunger pangs are purely there because of physical reasons. This is so far from the truth!
If this was true then we wouldn’t be living in a time where people are constantly feeling hungry, even though they’ve already eaten more than their fill! This is something that both Liisa and myself have struggled with for a good part of our lives.
We both know from experience that a lot of the time what drives us to eat and consume more really stems from our stress, anxiety, and emotional issues. I realized some years ago that I have a tendency to be an emotional eater. I can be like an addict looking for a fix when it comes to food.
When doing a juice cleanse you may be forced to deal with mental or emotional issues that you normally stuff down with food. Those “hunger pangs” you think your feeling sometimes can simply be related to the fact that you normally deal with your emotions or stress by eating! I know I did, and still do sometimes! This is something that I’m learning to be much more aware of.
During a juice cleanse we are forced to deal with our thoughts and emotional issues head on! This can be an extremely liberating process for some, but it doesn’t always come easy! Many recommend that you take up yoga, meditation, or some other form of relaxation during your juice cleanse. We definitely recommend that you consider any one or all of these as well!
While all the above is true, sometimes we are just hungry. When this is the case refer to tip #1. 🙂
#3. Be Gentle With Yourself
This one tip right here can be the turning point for your success! If you’re anything like me you like doing things right, and if you’re going to do something you might as well do it big! This can be a great quality to have in some cases, but it can also lead to you not accepting anything less than everything! This kind of mentality is the downfall of many a person who has attempted a juice cleanse.
When you put large amounts of pressure on yourself, and are then in turn even harder on yourself when you don’t reach the goals, you are setting yourself up for failure before you even begin! Goals are great, and I’ll talk about them in the next tip, but before you get way too far ahead of yourself, be sure to take care of right now during every single moment of the day.
Run down a little checklist and be honest with yourself when doing so. Ask yourself, how do you feel right now? Are you anxious, tired, stressed, overwhelmed, or do you feel just fine?
Be understanding with yourself, and above all be kind and gentle! If you’re not, who else is going to be? You need to start becoming your own best friend!
Congratulate yourself and be happy with your accomplishments, no matter how big or small they are! Also read a bit more about reducing stress during your juice cleanse in this article here.
This takes us right to tip 4.
#4. Set A Goal And If You Don’t Reach It The First Time, That’s Okay!
What if someone you cared about told you they set a goal to run 20 miles in a single day tomorrow, and when you saw them the next day they said they were able to finish 15 miles that day! Would you come down on them and tell them how disappointed you were that they didn’t run all 20 miles, or would you tell them how awesome they were for actually running 15 miles in a day!?!?!?
Most likely you would think it was a pretty big accomplishment to run the 15 miles? Heck, some of us can’t even run a few miles in a day right? Come on now!
Listen to what I’m about to say here. I’m telling you because it’s very possible that you do this to yourself. I know because I have in the past and I still work on this, to this day!
Okay, here goes!
You don’t need to be superman or superwoman right from the start here! Your health and well being is a marathon, not a sprint! Any progress you make today is forward progress, and you should be proud of yourself for doing it!
If your goal during your juice cleanse was to complete 7 days, and you only made it through 1 day, guess what? You made it 1 day farther than you would have if you didn’t try at all! If you’ve never done a juice cleanse, then you just made it through an entire day on juice alone!
If you make it through the entire 7 days, then you should congratulate yourself and feel good about it as well! The point is to be kind to yourself, be your own friend, and recognize your accomplishments.
Our All Or Nothing Minds Can Actually Get In Our Own Way!
Believe me, many times our “all or nothing” mentality is exactly what got us to the place where we need to do a juice cleanse in the first place. Taking on big tasks can be a great thing and it can lead to great rewards, but remember that it takes many smaller steps to ascend a staircase. If you’re familiar with the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day” then keep this in mind.
At the same time, there’s nothing wrong with just full on going for it and taking big steps to get your health on track. Just remember that if you fall short of your grandiose vision, it’s okay! You’re still awesome! 🙂
If you still want to go for that goal, then guess what? You can simply get right back up and give it another go!
Too many people give up and throw the towel in entirely because they set a goal and didn’t reach it. Setting goals is a good idea and really can help you to be more clear about what you want to get out of your juice cleanse, but don’t let not reaching a goal throw you so far off track that you give up altogether.
Do you know how many successful people have set goals and not reached some of them? Probably every single successful person in the world! The point is that they tried, and gave it their best shot. The bonus that comes with setting goals is that no matter what you have at least gotten closer to something than you were before.
If your goal for your juice cleanse is to go for 14 days and lose as much weight as you can, and you make it for 3 days and lose a little bit of weight, guess what? You did a juice cleanse a lot longer and lost more weight than you would of if you didn’t try! Also you need to remember this. You’re still here! You can simply try again! It’s okay! Give yourself a break, and look at what you accomplished.
So many people set goals, then when they don’t reach them they figure screw it all! Instead of being happy about what they accomplished, they do a 180 degree turn around and not only give up, but go in the opposite direction! You don’t need to do this! Remember step #3. and be gentle and understanding with yourself.
Take a few days break, and then try it again. Nothing is lost! In fact, you will know more going into your second attempt than you did during your first attempt. See, you’ve made more progress than you even realize! Yep, life is a marathon, not a sprint!
I’ve dealt with this myself plenty and have had to change my juice cleanse plans once I realized the timing just wasn’t right!
#5. Keep In Mind That The First Few Days Of A Juice Cleanse Can Sometimes Be The Toughest
It’s easy to go into a juice cleanse and think it’s going to be easy breezy and that you’re going to have this immediate burst of energy. Many people that talk about their juice cleanse experiences tend to leave out the more challenging parts.
This doesn’t mean that you won’t experience awesome amounts of energy at some point, and you might even be one of the lucky ones that experience it immediately. If you don’t though, guess what? That’s completely normal!
A lot of the time the first 3 days or so of a juice cleanse can be the most challenging. There’s even a term for this. Juice cleansers call this the “3 day hump” and you might have even heard one talking about getting over the hump.
A lot of this “hump” has to do with switching up your diet from mainly solids to completely liquids. Not only does the body need a few days to adjust, but this can be a big psychological challenge for a lot of people at first.
On top of this, you are likely to be detoxing some at first, and this can cause you to experience some of the symptoms of detox. These can include headaches, fatigue, nausea, a general foggy feeling, crankiness, and a slew of other symptoms. If you’re coming off of coffee, then you will most likely experience headaches from this alone!
Some people won’t experience detox symptoms at first, but it’s a good idea to be aware of them and be prepared mentally in case you do.
Experiencing some detox symptoms and having certain expectations can lead many people to giving up on their juice cleanse far too soon. Just keep in mind that many times the first few days can be the toughest, and you most likely will not be feeling the same way throughout your entire juice cleanse!
If you’re having a rough day hang in there because the next day may bring something completely different!
#6. Make Sure You Have Actually Drank Juice Before You Start Your First Juice Cleanse
I know this one sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people jump into a juice cleanse without ever even having tried a juice before.
Not only is having some juice before you do a juice cleanse a good idea, but it would be an even better idea to try substituting a few meals with juice before you try your first juice cleanse altogether.
Also, if you plan on your first juice cleanse being 2 weeks to 30 days or longer, it might be a good idea to try out a day long juice cleanse, or a 3 day juice cleanse first. This can give you some experience and more of an idea of what you’re in for when you do your longer juice cleanse.
Some people drink a couple of juices, love how it feels, and then dive into a juice cleanse head on!
I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with this if that works for you. I’m just saying that if you haven’t even drank a juice before, or if you’ve had a hard time with your juice cleanse, you might want to consider getting a little more juicing in under your belt before you move forward!
One way to do this is to try our 30 Days To Green Juicing Challenge. It’s free, very straight forward, and will slowly get your taste buds more used to the flavor of green juices. Basically you add one juice a day to your regular diet and we provide the recipe for you each day. You really should check it our if you’re newer to juicing.
