I’ve really been getting into yoga more lately! In fact right now I’m on day 23 of a 30 day yoga challenge I decided to do for myself.
I’ve also done yoga in the past, and have included it in the exercises that I do during a juice cleanse. While we’re on the topic you might be interested to find out what other kinds of exercises you can do during a juice cleanse.
Anyhow, the more I’ve been getting into yoga the more I’ve been inspired to do some digging and find out how it can be helpful during a juice cleanse. I’ve experienced some of this for myself, but I really wanted to explore it a bit deeper and share what I found with you!
Staying Calm During Your Juice Cleanse Is A Good Thing!
Whether you’re doing a juice cleanse for weight loss, detox, or any other reason, staying calm and focused during this time is a good idea!
Many of us come to juice cleansing because we have made some poor decisions in the past regarding our dietary choices. This has either put extra weight on us, or has been part of what has led us to suffer from some kind of health disorder. If you are in this category then you have already battled with trying to eat better, and you probably know that you’re most tempted when you’re stressed out or generally not feeling centered!
Then there’s this…
Stress Actually Makes You Hold Onto Extra Weight!
Stress not only leads us to over-eating and making other poor dietary choices, but there’s even more to it. Did you know that being chronically stressed actually contributes directly to weight gain? Not only to gaining extra weight as fat, but to holding onto this extra weight as well.
In an article titled “Why We Gain Weight When We’re Stressed—And How Not To“
written by Melanie Greenberg, Ph.D. on the Psychology Today website, she states that when we are chronically stressed “we are prone to getting an extra layer of “visceral fat” deep in our bellies.” She goes on to say that “The fat releases chemicals triggering inflammation, which increases the likelihood that we will develop heart disease or diabetes. And it can make it more difficult to fit into those lovely jeans you splurged on, leading to more stress about money wasted! Unfortunately, excess cortisol also slows down your metabolism, because your body wants to maintain an adequate supply of glucose for all that hard mental and physical work dealing with the threat.” Melanie also mentions that stress leads to anxiety and getting less sleep, both which will directly contribute to weight gain, or losing less weight even when we’re working at keeping those pounds off!
Yoga Is Your De-Stressing Friend!
Yoga is great for de-stressing, grounding, and bringing us back into a more focused place. Other exercise can help with some of this as well, but yoga excels at doing so! Many of the poses and breathing techniques that are a part of yoga are designed to specifically aid with stress reduction and mindfulness.
Generally speaking yoga can be a very beneficial ally for many reasons, and stress is just one of them! Not to mention that feeling calm, grounded, and focused will also help you to stay on track and succesfully complete your juice cleanse!
Yoga Also Burns Calories!
While yoga may not always burn as many calories as a more intensive kind of exercise, it burns calories all the same. An added bonus is that you can burn calories while being very gentle on your body. This combined with yoga’s stress reduction benefits makes it a very powerful way to lose weight gently during your juice cleanse, or at any time.
For a 150 pound person yoga is said to burn between 189 to 594 calories in an hour depending on what type of yoga you are doing. If you weigh more you will generally burn more! Even though I said above that yoga may not always burn as many calories as an intensive exercise, 594 calories is nothing to scoff at! That’s actually a decent burn for an hour!
This combined with it’s de-stressing capabilities makes yoga a very powerful tool for losing more weight in a healthy way during your juice cleanse!
How Yoga Encourages Detoxification
To be able to talk about how yoga assists with detoxification during your juice cleanse, I’m going to need to introduce you to the lymphatic system.
What Is The Lymphatic System?
The lymph nodes as described in the infographic above not only produce and store cells which fight disease and infection, but they also filter the lymph fluid before it returns to the circulatory system. The reason this is necessary is the lymph itself contains waste products that were cleaned out of the blood in the first place. This makes the lymphatic system a filter of sorts, which originates from our circulatory system and then returns to it.
This means that keeping the lymphatic system clear of obstructions and moving optimally is highly important to our body’s health!
This Is All Interesting But How Does Yoga Help With The Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like our blood circulatory system does (the heart). Instead, the fluid in the lymph rely’s on muscle motion and contraction to move it along. Yoga excels at reaching muscles and places in our body that we don’t normally reach, and many of the poses and exercises you do during yoga reverse the flow of gravity in our body, which also aids with lymphatic flow.
Specifically, the pressure that yoga poses can put on certain parts of our body that we don’t normally exercise can help to release blockages and clear up areas of lymphatic congestion. Generally speaking, it really helps things to flow much more smoothly in our body!
A good example would be a tube of toothpaste. When you just push down on it you can only get so much of the toothpaste out, but by twisting it and rolling it up you can get almost all of it out. This is very similar to the effect yoga can have on the lymphatic system.
Since a good amount of the detoxification that takes place in our body occurs through and inside the lymphatic system it’s important to keep it running optimally.
Yoga To Cleanse Toxic Thoughts and Emotions
Some of you reading this may have a knee jerk reaction that makes you want to skip right over this part, but I encourage you to hang in here with me for a minute so I can explain what I mean.
Have you ever heard the saying Clear Mind, Clear Body? These are not just some fluffy words with well intention. There is a very definitive meaning behind them. As you read earlier in this article stress can have some very real effects on our weight, but it can also affect a whole lot more! On top of this negative thinking in general can actually harm your health. Yoga can be a great way not only to promote relaxation, but also to take a more mindful look at the beliefs that may be limiting us.
If you are truly looking to experience a complete and holistic juice cleanse then I encourage you to consider including yoga.
