I just got finished reading an email where the person mentioned they really wanted to do a longer juice cleanse to change their taste buds. This got me to thinking about how much this is an understated benefit of juicing and especially juice cleansing.
Why Would Someone Want To Change Their Taste Buds?
That’s a good question, and I’ve got some good answers. 🙂
If you’re someone who has been trying to eat healthier foods and really has a hard time sticking with it, or even enjoying them at all then changing your taste buds could really benefit you!
Processed Foods and Fast Foods Are Rigged
The problem with many processed foods or a lot of the food you find at fast food places is that there has been changes made to them to purposefully make them more palatable to you. Since many of us grow up eating this type of food, or simply eat a lot of it now our taste buds get adjusted to the assault of sugars, salts, and other chemical additives that are coming at us. Over time we literally become hooked to unhealthy types of foods, because our taste buds have been dulled down to anything other than the additives in them.
This was put really well in this article written by David Katz, MD when he said
Part of what the industry has done is to propagate an arms race — with your taste buds. Human taste buds are predisposed to like sweet — so putting sugar in food is apt to make people like it. Now imagine, though, that your competitor’s product is outselling yours because it has just a bit more sugar —what are you to do? Increase your own sugar content.
See where this can lead? More sugar means sweeter; sweeter means tastier; tastier means more sales. As manufacturers compete in this area, taste buds start acclimating to more, and more, and more sugar. The more they get, they more they want. And so we wind up with ever more sugar in our food partly because… We’re asking for it! We’re asking for it because our taste buds are desensitized to sugar the more they get, and need ever more to register satisfaction.
This same scenario applies to salt — and other properties of foods, too, such as creaminess. The more we get, the more we tend to want. The more we want, the more we get.
You can see how this cycle can lead to eating more and more unhealthy foods, which leads to possible health issues and weight gain for many of us.
The alternative suggested for most of us is to of course EAT HEALTHIER FOODS. Many of these types of foods are plant based foods such as vegetables, fruits etc. The problem with this for many of us and maybe you is that these foods don’t taste as good to our taste buds as the foods that have been loaded down with additives specifically targeting said taste buds. So, on the cycle continues and those who have health issues, or struggle with obesity remain stuck in that cycle wondering how to get out of it.
Juicing Can Help To Change Your Taste Buds
When I first began juicing there were some green vegetable juices that I literally could not stand! There were also a lot of them that I could, but then again I was pretty motivated to get into juicing as I had recently found out that I had psoriatic arthritis. I know not everyone has the same kind of motivation or desire to get into juicing, or to eat better.
Over time I have come to like and even love the flavors of many green juices. I can now drink some of the strongest flavored juices that initially tasted not so great, and made me feel like a kid who was forcing medicine down! I also have come to love many vegetables, fruits, and other healthy foods on an ongoing basis that I never thought I would. Juice cleansing was a powerful tool along the way and I’ll get to that, but just drinking a juice a day or drinking juice more often than not really went a long way towards changing my taste buds.
How Drinking One Juice A Day Can Help
If you’re not used to associating vegetables and fruits with feeling good or being something that you enjoy, then it goes without saying that swapping them in for your favorite processed foods or fast foods is not going to be something you’re highly motivated to do! But, if you can experience for yourself over time how good juicing can feel, or how some juices actually taste good then you may slowly be more motivated to do so.
Not to mention that your taste buds will slowly change as they’re introduced to different types of vegetables and fruits on a daily basis.
If you’re newer to juicing you may not want to dive right into doing a juice cleanse, but might be motivated to jump right on board and take part of an easy to do juicing challenge. Drinking a juice a day might sound like a much easier way to begin your journey towards better eating and wellness.
We happen to have a juicing challenge right here onsite that is completely FREE for you to do, no strings attached. There is nothing to sign up for and all you have to do is drink one juice a day. We provide you with one juice recipe a day to make and drink, and your juice recipes progress from fruit juices towards greener juices with more vegetables in them. You do this while eating your regular diet (hopefully a healthy one, or at least improving). 🙂
This is a nice and easy way to gently help your taste buds crave the kinds of foods that will get you to where you want to be.
Juice Cleansing Is Another Powerful Way To Change Your Taste Buds
Every time I have done a juice cleanse and especially an extended 30 day juice cleanse, I’ve been amazed at how much my taste buds have changed after. Not only do unhealthy foods that I thought tasted great before have almost no flavor to them, but healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and more taste absolutely delicious!
I remember one 30 day juice cleanse I did where I couldn’t get the aroma and flavor of pizza out of my mind! I mean, there was a pizza place that was directly in the path where I walked to get most of my produce for the juice cleanse. So I got to breathe in all kinds of pizza smells every day when I walked by.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention how much I really loved pizza! Did I also forget to mention that I was trying to lose weight, and that part of the reason I couldn’t keep my weight off was because I ate too much of foods like pizza sometimes?
You might be thinking really? You’re supposed to be this big into juicing guy who has a website and blog, and you obsessed about pizza sometimes during your juice cleanse?
Yep, guess what? I’m human! Just like you! I wasn’t always and still am not a perfect juicing machine who juices constantly, and plows through juice cleanses like it ain’t no thing! 🙂
Anyhow… I know we recommend and always promote coming off of your juice cleanse with healthy foods especially if you’re trying to maintain weight loss, but this was early on in my juice cleansing days and honestly I pretty much ignored my own advice, and ate a flipping pizza the second day off of the cleanse!
Pizza Tasted Like Bland Cardboard!
Wow was I disappointed! First off I actually thought we had gotten a “dud” pizza (which I laugh about now), but when I ate some orange chicken the following day from a Chinese American fast food place I realized it wasn’t the food, it was me. Or maybe a better way of saying it is that it was the food and me at the same time, because the orange chicken tasted just as bland as the pizza had.
I want to let you know that I loved this specific pizza before I did the juice cleanse, but now the pizza tasted like the most bland thing I had ever put into my mouth. It literally tasted like I was eating cardboard! I tried to kick up the flavor by adding salt, which is something I did before the juice cleanse because it almost always made things taste even better.
Whoa! Not this time! Nope! It just made it taste like a flavorless pile of salt I was putting into my mouth. I remember asking my partner Liisa is this actually what tomato sauce and cheese tastes like? It was warm yet there was no flavor there. I also wondered how the salt ever really “enhanced” the flavors, because it just tasted more salty to me. Like cardboard with salt all over it.
Salad and Other Vegetables and Fruits Were Heavenly!
That same day I got a large salad with all kinds of different vegetables on it. The dressing was a very simple olive oil with some vinegar and just a bit of salt. That salad was probably one of the best things I’ve ever tasted in my life! I couldn’t believe how good it was, and I seriously woofed that salad down like I was starving or something. My taste buds had been changed for the better!
I went on to eat many more vegetables, fruits as well as other raw living foods in the weeks that followed, and never have I regretted opening my taste buds up to the REAL flavors inside of foods.
I’m Not The Only One
My partner Liisa experienced the same thing, and so have many other people! You just don’t realize how good healthy foods can taste until you’ve cleaned your palate up. I personally believe this is due to what I talked about earlier in the article about how many of our foods are loaded down with additives that fool our taste buds into thinking we like them. It just takes some time to re-train our taste buds to start craving the kinds of foods that actually give our body the nutrients it needs to get us to where we want to be.
When it comes to healing yourself through foods, or losing weight by eating better then changing your taste buds can be one of the most powerful things you can do!
If You’re Interested In Doing A Juice Cleanse
If you’re wanting to change your taste buds so that you crave the foods which are better for you, then you may want to consider doing a juice cleanse for this reason alone!
