Can’t remember where you left your keys more often than you’d like? Ever feel like your focus and memory just aren’t what they used to be?
Lucky for you there’s a sweet and delicious way to not only improve your memory, but also prevent age and memory related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s! That way is apple juice!
While some people enjoy apple juice all by itself, many use it to flavor their green juices. In the process it’s easy to forget that not only is apple juice a good sweetener, it also contains some pretty potent nutrients of its own.
If you’ve been feeling a bit “foggy” and out of focus you may want to add some apple juice to your diet. Here’s why!
Improve Your Memory With Apple Juice
Research done at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) found that apple juice may increase production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, resulting in improved memory (1). Acetylcholine is produced in several locations in the brain and can promote learning by playing a role in the encoding of new memories (2) (3).
Apple Juice and Alzheimer’s Disease
Thomas Shea, Ph.D. who has taken part in more than one study focusing in on apple juice concluded that “consumption of apples and apple juice can help reduce problems associated with memory loss.” including alzheimers. In fact a specific study he was part of found that drinking apple juice just three times a week could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 75% (4)!
Part of these benefits may come from the fact that acetylcholine-producing cells are damaged in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. If apple juice increases the productivity of these “brain-beneficial” cells it could possibly keep Alzheimer’s disease at bay altogether.
It’s important to note that many Alzheimer’s drugs work by increasing the effectiveness of acetylcholine in the brain. It’s pretty amazing in my own opinion that nature has included a similar natural remedy to Alzheimer’s in the apple.
Quercetin & Alzheimer’s
Quercetin is an antioxidant found in apples, and is very concentrated in the peel. A good reason to juice your apples, peel and all! Quercetin has been found to protect brain cells against excitotoxicity, the process by which neurons are damaged and killed. This kind of cellular damage has been observed in Alzheimer’s patients. The antioxidant quercetin literally activates the brains natural defense system (called Nrf2) and prevents brain cell death by upgrading cellular defenses (5). How could you not feel good about getting some of this stuff into your body?!
Need Some Apple Juice Recipes?
While it’s true you could simply make some straight up apple juice to enjoy, there are many other health benefits you can receive if you include other vegetables and fruits in your juice.
