What Juicer Is The Best For Me?

If you are new to juicing, or even if you have been juicing for awhile you may have wondered at one time or another, what is the best juicer to buy? On this page we will be clearing up some of the confusion surrounding different types of juicers, will talk about our choices for the best juicers, and will help you to sift through all of the information that is out there. This should help you to make the best decision and get the most value for your money when purchasing your juicer.

In general, there are three main categories that juicers fall into that make them different from one another. These are centrifugal juicers, masticating juicers (single gear juicers), and triturating Juicers (twin gear juicers). All of these juicer types have pros and cons. We will go through these in detail on this page so that you can make a better decision when selecting the best juicer for you to buy.

Centrifugal Type Juicers

Centrifugal juicers are more common and may beBest centrifugal juicer to buy the type of juicer that most people are generally familiar with. Centrifugal juicers usually have an upright design with a large chute or cylindrical chamber that you load your fruit and vegetables into.

Once loaded into the juicer a spinning blade grinds the plant material down and sends it against the walls of a mesh screen that is spinning at a high speed. The centrifugal force of the mesh screen then pulls the juice out of the pulp, filters it through and delivers it to you, usually through a spigot of some sort. The pulp is either left behind for you to clean out as you go, or in a lot of cases it is ejected out and you can place down a container to catch the pulp and then a separate container to collect the juice.>


  • One of the upsides of a centrifugal juicer is that they are faster than the other two types of juicers. If you are in general busier and need to juice quickly in order to have some on the go, this can be helpful.
  • A centrifugal juicer can also handle bigger pieces of fruit and vegetables, which can make the preparation easier and more time effective.
  • In general, centrifugal juicer are more affordable than masticating juicers and triturating juicers. This is not always the case, but the cheapest models available are usually the more commonplace centrifugal juicers.


  • One of the downsides of a centrifugal type juicer is they are generally less efficient than a masticating juicer, or a triturating juicer type. This has been my experience as well as countless other people. The pulp that comes out of a centrifugal type juicer is a lot wetter than that of a masticating type juicer or a triturating type juicer. This means that a centrifugal type juicer produces less juice in general. We can’t speak to exactly how much less this is, but in general it has been shown to be less than the other types mentioned above. So, the money you save from purchasing this type of juicer could in the long run be lost by the amount of juice left inside of the pulp.
  • Centrifugal type juicers are not as efficient when juicing leafy greens and in general cannot juice wheatgrass. This does not mean that they cannot juice leafy greens, it is just that they will not be nearly as efficient as a masticating juicer when it comes to this. A lot of people overcome this difficulty by rolling their leafy greens up into a tight sort of ball. This way they are more densely packed together, which seems to help the centrifugal juicers have an easier time.
  • Centrifugal juicers can only make juice. The other two types of juicers mentioned here can do more than just juice. This will be expanded upon more below.
  • Centrifugal type juicers are louder in general than the other two types of juicers. This is not the case with all of them, but it is the case in general. Reading reviews of the specific juicer you are looking into could help shed some light in this area when looking to make a decision on which one is right for you.
  • One of the main downsides associated with centrifugal juicer types is that the rapid rpm’s they run at generate heat and also introduce air into the juice, causing oxidation. This can damage the nutrients, antioxidants, and enzymes in the juice. While you will still get a lot of the health benefits that the juice delivers, your juices full potential may be diminished.

Conclusion For Centrifugal Type Juicers

If you are on a budget and/or are just wanting to give juicing a shot without making a larger financial commitment a centrifugal juicer can save you a lot of time when it comes to the preparation and juicing of your fruit and vegetables, as well as money.

You will still get a lot of the health benefits of juicing using a centrifugal type juicer. The exact amounts of nutrients lost in the process of juicing while using these types of juicers has not been shown in great detail. Also, when speaking of nutrient loss many people are speaking about optimal values of nutrition, and of course, you want to get as much out of your juice as possible. Rest assured, drinking fresh raw juices made by yourself, in your own home, made by almost any juicer is going to yield high amounts of vitamins, minerals, and many other nutrients that will be great for your health.

Drinking your own homemade juice from any juicer is much healthier than drinking store bought pasteurized juice that has been sitting on a shelf for who knows how long. The nutrient degradation that has occurred in shelf juices goes far beyond anything that takes place with fresh made juices that are consumed within a day or so of making them. Most of the nutrients that are found in packaged juices have been added back into them because they don’t have many of their own left.

We tell a lot of people when they are trying to make a decision about the best juicer to buy is  that the best juicers for people are the ones they will use. If a centrifugal juicer is what you can afford, then it is going to be a much better choice than not buying a juicer at all.

Another thing to consider is what kinds of produce are you going to be juicing more of? If you are not going to be juicing as many leafy greens as often and instead are looking for a juicer that can handle fruit and other vegetables, then a centrifugal juicer may be good for you. Masticating Type Juicers

Masticating juicers use a single gear or auger to One of the Best Juicersliterally chew up the fiber of fruit and vegetables. The cell walls of the fruits or vegetables are broken down through a grinding motion. The juice is then squeezed and separated from the pulp by crushing the produce against a screen. The leftover pulp and the juice come out of the juicer through separate exits and can both be collected by containers or whatever means you wish to use.


  • One of the upsides of a masticating type juicer is that they are able to juice just about any kind of fruit and vegetable. Masticating juicers can also handle juicing leafy greens as well as wheatgrass. This means you do not have to purchase a separate wheatgrass juicer if this is one of the things you would like to juice. This also means a much greater efficiency in juicing your leafy greens, which can make a huge difference in the long run.
  • Masticating type juicers in general extract juice more efficiently than a centrifugal type juicer. We have owned both types and this is something that we have definitely noticed. The pulp from the masticating juicer has been a lot drier and the amount of juice that we have gotten from many fruit and vegetables has been more. Many other people have this experience as well. There have been quite a few tests to demonstrate the efficiency of a mastication style juicer vs a centrifugal style juicer. There is one vegetable that seems to yield more in a centrifugal juicer than in a masticating juicer. These are carrots, and although there is not a huge difference in the yield I thought it would be notable to mention this here to provide you with as much information as possible. 
  • Masticating type juicers can also handle other tasks separate from juicing. Masticating juicers can make nut butter, baby food, and frozen desserts (We like to make a banana/strawberry frozen desert that tastes just like ice cream. So good!). They can also extrude pasta (you can make your own pasta), extrude the milk from soy or nut mixtures (you can make your own nut milk), act as a food processor that can chop you’re favorite vegetables, and grind coffee as well. They are able to do this with different attachments that usually come with the juicer when you purchase it. 
  • The final, and to me one of the great benefits of a masticating type juicer is the quality of the juice that comes out. The masticating type juicers do not heat up nearly as much as the centrifugal type juicers. The juice that comes out of a masticating juicer retains the precious nutrients, enzymes, and antioxidants of the produce. The juice also is oxidized a lot less than the juice from a centrifugal type juicer. The juice from a masticating juicer in general retains a high amount of the good stuff you are trying to get into your body.


  • One of the downsides to a masticating type juicer vs a centrifugal type juicer is the general price of one.  In general, masticating juicers are more expensive, and this could be a consideration if you are on a budget.The upside to spending more money up front on one of these juicers though is that you will be getting more juice out of your fruit and vegetables over time. This will obviously add up and make it a much better bargain in the long run, especially if you plan on juicing a lot.
  • The only other downside to a masticating type juicer vs a centrifugal type juicer is related to the time spent making your juice. In general, it does take more time making your juice with a masticating juicer. You will need to take more time to prepare your produce when using a masticating juicer. There is usually a smaller feed chute for these type of juicers and also they work at a much lower rpm. You will need to cut your produce into pieces of the right size so it can fit into the feed chute. Masticating juicers use an auger to crush the juice vs a blade which rapidly cuts the produce apart in a centrifugal juicer. Many will agree that the extra time spent to prepare their produce is well worth it, as you will be getting a better quality juice. This to me is what separates these two types of juicers the most.

Conclusion For Masticating Type Juicers

If you are looking to get more out of your fruit and vegetables and have it in your budget, then a masticating type juicer would be one of the best juicers to buy. Not only will your juices be more nutrient dense, but you will save a lot of money in the long run as this juicer will squeeze more juice out per item of produce. Also, while it is true that a centrifugal type juicer is quicker when juicing most of the time, a lot of masticating juicers can make up for this extra time by being much easier and quicker to clean up after each use. Many say this puts them on a level playing field when comparing them for overall time spent juicing.

Another bonus with masticating type juicers is the variety of other functions that can be used for. If you are someone who would like to make nut milks, make your own fruit desserts, make your own pasta, have an extra food processor around, grind your own coffee, or make your own healthy baby food, then this juicer could be best for you.  

A big factor to take into consideration when considering what the best juicer to buy is, what juicer you will be using the most. If you are going to be juicing a decent amount of leafy greens then you will definitely want to consider a masticating or triturating type juicer over a centrifugal type juicer.       Hello, You can use a vitamix to make your juices. The process will take you time more time though than using a juicer to make juices. If you cannot afford a juicer though and would like to enjoy juices yes you can definitely use your vitamix to make your juices.

      What you do is just blend your ingredients together and then you will want to strain them through something to get the juices seperated from the pulp. A lot of people will use nut bags, or a cheese cloth to do this with. I have even read an article where a person used a pair of tights to do this with! I have even heard of people using clean clothing to do this, including old unused t shirts and other stuff. These would be a lot harder to get all the juice though as they would not make an optimal filter. I personally would recomend the nut bag or cheese cloth route, but sometimes you got to do what you got to do. :)

      Basically you will pour your blended mix into the bag of your choice over a large bowl or container that the juice will end up in. You then squeeze the bag to get as much juice out as possible. The pulp will be left in the bag and you will get juice inside of your container!

      This would be an excellent way of being able to make juices for yourself if you cannot afford a separate juicer. During a juice cleanse I could definitely see this being a lot of hassle as you will be wanting to consume a lot of juice, but it all depends on the person.     Is it a bad thing to eat some of the pulp? I make green monster smoothies with spinach and fruit and drink it without straining it. Would some of the other veggies not taste good with the pulp left in? Or is there another negative aspect of leaving the pulp in?

      Hello Kim, There is nothing at all wrong with eating the pulp. It is just not the same as a juice. Smoothies and juices are two different things. If you are doing a "juice cleanse" like we talk about on the site, then you will want to actually drink juices only to get the maximum benefits.

      If you are just trying to get some more vegetables and fruits into your diet through smoothies or juices by enjoying them here and there then either is fine. The main difference being that with juices you are left without most of the insoluble fiber(a lot of people do not know there still is soluble fiber in juice). The insoluble fiber is what we know as "pulp".

      This leaves behind the juice which contain all of the nutrients in pure form. The nutrients in juice is immediately available for your body to absorb and use. Since you do not have all of that extra pulp, which takes up a lot of volume and leaves you feeling fuller. You can actually consume more of the vegetables and fruits in the form of juices usually than you can in smoothies. So in general you can get a whole lot more at one time with a juice than you can with a smoothie.

      Your body also does not have to expend the energy and time to break down all of that fiber to get to the nutrition. I mean in a smoothie you do release a lot of the juice, but all of that fiber is still there and your body will have to work to digest that.

      With smoothies you get all of the benefits of the nutrients inside of the vegetable and fruits plus all of the fiber. You can do a smoothie cleanse, but it just isn't the same as a juice cleanse. A big part of the benefits you get from a juice cleanse is the break your body and organs get from having to digest all of the food you put into it. That coupled with the nutrients being available immediately for your body really make juices effective.

      On a day to day basis though and if you are just looking to add some smoothies to your diet there are no negative aspects of leaving the pulp in that I am aware of. It is just like eating your vegetables and fruits, except they are all blended up for you so you can guzzle them down. As for flavor I imagine that is different for each person, but I do know that leafy greens and Broccoli can be a stronger flavor at first. I imagine this would be the same for people who just begin drinking stronger tasting leafy greens or broccoli in their smoothies. Again to each their own though.

      While I have heard the nutribullet makes a great smoothie, it is not a juicer. There is a difference between a juicer and a blender/smoothie maker. One leaves all of the pulp in(basically blends the entire produce item) and this is what the nutribullet does. The other extracts the juice from the pulp of the produce item and leaves most of the pulp out(although most juicers cannot catch it all and do leave some pulp inside) and this is a juicer.

      Everything we talk about on this page refers to juicers, and all of our recipes are juice recipes. I am sure some of them would make decent smoothies though to.

      If you are wanting to begin juicing and not smoothie making, then you will want a juicer, unless you are willing to strain the pulp from your blender manually. The juicers we talk about on this page are in our opinion the best juicers to buy on the market. If you read through the page you will learn a whole lot more and hopefully will be able to determine which one best fits your needs.

      You are correct that the ninja does not make juices, but makes smoothies. I have noticed a lot of the websites of blending type machines advertising that their machine will make juices that include the pulp. These are actually smoothies and not juices no matter how they word it.

    I had originally purchased a NutruBullet but at first I was looking at the Fusion Juicer. To make a long story shorter I ended up buying a Fusion Juicer off an EBay auction that arrived non working so I purchased a Hamilton Beach Big Mouth ( and boy, is it powerful), and sold the Nutribullet. After drinking my first full glass of juice ( cucumber,parsley,ginger,lemon,and asian pear) I felt more refreshed and less full as to when I had made “NutriBlasts”. I wish I had just gone with getting the juicer in the first place…but what matters is now I have one and its more just a pesonal preferance of what types of foods& drinks you want to make. I also have a half decent blender that is for smoothies/protein drinks…but its not a VitaMix or a Ninja but it does what I need it to. Either way I am trying to increase healthy eating & drinking…and thats really all thats important no matter how you do it.

    I have recently brought a Nutri Ninja,but I recently decided I wanted to start juicing for weight loss. Can I still use my Ninja?

      Unless they have since put out a juicer a Ninja is a blender which makes a smoothie rather than a juice. Smoothies are healthy and when combined with exercise and healthy diet can help promote more weight loss. If you’re looking to juice and especially juice cleanse for weight loss you’ll want an actual juicer, or you’ll want to separate the juice from the pulp that comes out of your Ninja.     My initial thought was to buy a Jack LaLanne juicer; but didn’t. I bought a Bella juicer; but returned it and finally got the Jack LaLanne juicer. With the Bella, I could not, without a struggle, get the filter basket to come off. With the Jack LaLanne juicer comes a tool to easily remove the blade and the basket. (Keep in mind – I turned 71 on the 12th of April and have a lack of strength in my hands – so, for me the best juicer turned out to be the Jack LaLanne juicer – not because of any ‘brand name’ – but because its the one I can use and because its the one I will use.) My purpose in writing this is – perhaps there are other 70 year olds wanting to juice for their health but hesitate to do so because they too have a lack of strength in their hands. You should hunt for the right juicer for yourself. With all the videos and informative pages everywhere, it is not difficult to find the perfect juicer. If I had not tried the Bella juicer first, I would not have known I would be so pleased with the Jack LaLanne juicer and I probably would have given up on juicing. Now, I have a counter full of fruits and veggies calling to me to make them into juice!!! Gotta Go!!! Irene

      Thanks for commenting on your experience with the different juicers you’ve tried so far! What you said about the best juicer for you is the one that you’ll use is spot on in my opinion. There are many different types of juicers, and they serve different purposes for different people. Some people are on the go and just want to make a quick juice here and there, some people are juicing solely for therapeutic reasons and don’t mind taking some extra time when juicing. I wrote this page with people in mind and all of the different circumstances they may have. My hope is that it helps people to find the juicer that is best for them!

      I’ve never used a Bella juicer, but I do know from experience that most cheaper juicers (and unfortunately many of these are the kind you’ll find in a store that does not specialize in kitchen equipment) are not worth the extra money you think you’re saving in the long run. They are usually more difficult to use (like the experience you had) and they don’t produce as much juice as a better model. I’m happy to hear you found a juicer that works for you, and also wanted to point out that the Breville juicers we talk about on this page are also very easy to operate and take apart like the Jack Lalane is. Liisa has a bit more experience using a Jack Lalane juicer than I do, but I do know the Breville models are good from my years of using them.

    For the best slower juicer, I would suggest one a slow juicer that doesn’t produce any heat as you have outline in your article. I know that these juicers can be quite pricey at times but after doing some research I came across some reasonably priced juicers. Something like the Zweissen slow juicer from Grosche or Think Kitchen. I just recently bought the Zweissen juicer for a great price and it does a good job at getting out all the juices- I was amazed by how dry the pulp was when it came out.

    I’d love to know your thoughts on manual slow juicers!

      Hey Liz,

      Slow masticating type juicers definitely squeeze more juice out of certain vegetables and fruits, and also produce less froth in general. I’ve been using both a masticating and a centrifugal juicer lately, and while the convenience of the centrifugal juicer is nice, it produces more froth than I like for apple juice and orange juice. I do like it still for “mushy” fruits like pineapple, pear, mango, and sometimes cucumbers depending on the crispness of the cucumber I’m juicing.

      I’ve never heard of the Zweissen slow juicer, but if it’s working for you then that’s great! I’ve also seen manual slow juicers, but I’ve never used one myself. I imagine for convenience and budget they probably can be a descent way to go for some people. If you were using one for a juice cleanse it would most definitely be a lot of work, because you would be using your arm a whole lot to manually crank all of the juice out that you’d need. I imagine for daily juicing a quality manual juicer may be cool though, but again I just haven’t used one myself.

    I have been a faithful Vitamix customer for several years. I have excellent results in keeping the extra pounds at bay by juicing fruit in the morning and veggies later in the day, usually after work. Plus, I feel great. When I make my pm vegetable juice I use 2 or 3 vegetables usually cucumber, carrots collard greens, asparagus and sometimes even organic tomato. I add about 4 cups water and blend them. Should I consider buying a new juicer

      Hey Mark,

      The vitamix isn’t a juicer per say, but is a very excellent blender. We own one ourselves and can do all kinds of different things with it. Our recipes were made using an actual juicer, which separates the juice out from the pulp. There are benefits that come from blenders, and benefits from juicers. If you’re juice cleansing you will want to use a juicer, or strain the contents to separate the juice from the pulp. I think you would get something out of this article here I wrote about the differences between juicing and blending.

    hello…can we tell masticating juicer or triturating juicers as cold press juicers? which juicer is best for commercial cold press juicer?

      Both masticating and triturating are cold press juicers, and either could be used commercially. I would recommend looking into a masticating juicer for smaller juicing operations because triturating juicers can be more time consuming when cleaning up. Omega makes quite a few juicers that might be good this purpose.

      If you’re going to be a larger operation you might want to look into a larger cold pressed juicer. We haven’t personally used any of the larger cold pressed juicers, but the Goodnature x1 seems to be a popular one right now. We can’t recommend it directly as we don’t know anyone personally who uses it, nor have we but after doing some reading it appears to be popular. It is expensive and for large operations though. Again I’d recommend you do your own research into that specific juicer as I have no experience with it.

    I own a Champion juicer that I’ve used for years and love but it doesn’t do wheatgrass, and greens like kale and collards become foamy. Does the Omega J8005 handle wheatgrass and greens as well as carrots and beets?

      Yes, It absolutely does Jose. That’s one of the juicers we use still to this day. We’ve done wheatgrass, kale, collards, carrots, beets, and all kinds of other veggies through that juicer, and it does well. Most juicers will produce a little foam (some more than others), but in our experience the Omega doesn’t make a “foamy” juice.
